Gran Canaria

An introduction to the most diverse of the Canarian Islands.

"The long dark European winters have very few positive points for the outdoor enthusiasts’ or for cyclist. For cyclists it means wrapping up the favourite carbon or lightweight angel away in the spare room and looking disconsolately at the 20lb winter monster that will be your wet and cold companion for the next 6 months.

However there is a sliver of brightness in the gloom, and that is, you can catch a plane to Gran Canaria and the following morning be setting out on a spanking new road or mountain bike under sunny blue skies to explore the anicent paths or serpentine roads of this unique island for a whole week.
Gran Canaria is the perfect place to escape to in the winter with all of its’ 128 beaches, zany night life and all year round average temperatures of 24ºC.

But few people are aware of the central & western mountainous area which with their hidden valleys and gorges provides a paradise for cyclists of all hues and levels. The island, well known as a miniature continent with a privileged eco-system, has 32 natural protected areas, 8 nature reserves and around 100 native plant species. In Gran Canaria you can actually witness the evolving flora – for the island is as important to scientists in terms of botany as the Galapagos Islands is for zoology.

Also due to its morphology, Gran Canaria is mountainous with abrupt and spectacular landscapes. The volcanic relief of the island was constructed by three major periods of volcanic eruptions over a period of 16 million years. The oldest rock formations, spewed forth as lava flows, vary in composition and lithology. Both the mountain and road routes here are characterized by the almost complete absence of flat plains and the constant changing terrain that make cycling a truly engaging experience.

The oldest rock, spewed forth as lava flows, vary in composition and lithology. Erosion put the final touches to moulding the elements that are now characteristic of the island's landscape of gullies, cliffs, crests, cauldrons, rock needles.

This makes for incredibly diverse scenery where every kilometre or corner turned offers something new to the rider.
